Activision to release Call of Duty DLC every few weeks

As we noted last year, Modern Warfare 3 is aiming to release downloadable content in the form of both multiplayer map packs and Spec-Ops content. This is said to span a total of twenty add-ons (the first of which comes out this month), and Activision's Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg tells Wired that the company plans on releasing downloadable content every few weeks.

"The idea of giving people constant incremental playable content and making it so you're never more than a few weeks away from the next new experience within the Call of Duty universe is part of what we're experimenting with," Hirshberg said.

However, DLC released more frequently could mean smaller portions served: "One of the things that was most appealing when we were researching these ideas with consumers is the idea of breaking up the DLC so that it comes more often and more regularly. We want to provide DLC to people more often and also experiment with more of a variety in the forms of playable content."

We've seen in the past that smaller map packs can work, such as Killzone 2 and 3's add-ons, which contained a couple of maps at under $5. However, releasing a $5 pack every few weeks adds up to the non-ELITE member, so we shall see.

Marcus Fenix rises in Gears of War 3's next DLC

In other downloadable content news, "Fenix Rising" will launch for Gears of War 3 on January 17 for 800 Microsoft Points, adding five new maps, four new character skins, 250 additional Achievement Points, and "Re-up."

"Re-up" is Gears' version of Call of Duty's "Prestige," where players can rank through level 100 three times, unlocking "exclusive emblems and weapon skins." Here, "Re-upping" will net you the following weapon skins: "Re-up Plasma," or animated plasma flowing in gold, a shiny, red "Re-up Omen," and lastly animated, golden "Re-up Electric" shocks. "Re-upping" will reset your number rank, but you'll keep your TrueSkill rating, profile unlocks and custom items.

Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski tells IGN that all the maps in the campaign extension represent a location or event that was significant in Marcus' life, so we'll be visiting the "Escalation" map from Gears of War, as well as the Academy and the prison where Marcus served time. All are said to offer a range of both tactical and assault-style gameplay.

"Fenix Rising" is the second to last add-on that season pass owners will get for free, with the first two being the "Horde Command Pack" and "RAAM's Shadow."

First Modern Warfare 3 DLC hits ELITE subscribers on January 24

[Update: Above is a screen of one of the maps in the first pack, simply called, "Park."]

Modern Warfare 3's season of downloadable content will begin for Xbox 360 gamers on January 24, Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling announced on Call of Duty ELITE's "Roll Call" program. Specifically, this is for ELITE subscribers on Xbox Live. As usual, the content will hit other platforms at a later time.

Every piece of Modern Warfare 3 DLC is developed by a team consisting of Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games, and Raven Software, and will run the spectrum of multiplayer maps, "Spec Ops" missions, and "a variety of things that players have never seen before." Other than that, no details on the first add-on have been revealed.

Folks can check out "Roll Call" on ELITE, so long as you have a paid subscription.

Space Marine's "Exterminatus" add-on dated

The co-operative downloadable add-on for Warhammer 40:000: Space Marine, "Exterminatus," will see a simultaneous release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25.

This four-player online co-op mode pits you and your buds against Orks and the Forces of Chaos, where you play as either a Tactical, Devastator, or Assault class marine using unlocked perks to your advantage. XP gained here will also transfer over to your multiplayer ranking.

"Exterminatus" will be playable on two maps--Assault on Habs Center Andreas, and Escape from Kalkys Facility. Developer Relic Entertainment also mentioned to Eurogamer that additional free and paid add-ons will follow after "Exterminatus."

Gears of War 3 getting "Season Pass," offers 33% discount on DLC

This is exactly what gamers love. A high-profile game thst isn't even out yet, but the developers are already talking about downloadable content. Nonetheless, Microsoft and Epic Games have announced the Gears of War 3 "Season Pass," a $30 purchase that nabs you the first four downloadable content releases at a discount of 33%. As of now, there's only a release window of this quarter, so any day between now and September can see the release of the new maps.

Left 4 Dead 2's "Dead Air" DLC Releasing Early [Hopefully]

Valve made the challenge--have 20,000 people on Steam obtain the "Stream Crosser" achievement in Left 4 Dead 2. The prize? An early release of the "Dead Air" downloadable content, a campaign taken from the original game. Well, within 24 hours of the challenge being issued, 60,774 people unlocked the achievement, and now Valve states that the "Dead Air" DLC will release earlier than its original July 22 date.

That is...if it's finished beforehand. The team is currently working out the kinks in The Terminal and Finalé segments of the campaign, and more work has to be done internally. Hopefully, we get to play "Dead Air" in L4D2 sooner rather than, say, a few hours before July 22.
