Modern Warfare 2 now available on PS Store

Modern Warfare 2 hit the PlayStation Store today for the cool price of $39.99, essentially the same price you will pay if you opt for the physical copy from a major retailer. Nonetheless, the single-player is a fun ride, and you can surely find people still playing the multiplayer.

The download weighs in at 7.26GB, so best clear some space for this bad boy.

Kmart on Black Friday: Discounts on Battlefield 3, RAGE, Gears 3, MGS HD, more

Wal-Mart and Best Buy have some hefty deals for this year's Black Friday hullabaloo, but that other retailer, Kmart, is not to be left out in the cold, cold November weather. They have their own chock full of deals starting at 5 a.m. November 25, including Battlefield 3 and the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for $35 each, Gears of War 3 for $40, and RAGE and Call of Duty: Black Ops for $30 each.

Those who have a backlog of games to buy can also pick up Transformers: War for Cybertron and the Gears of War Triple Pack for $15 each, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for $20, Killzone 3 for $30, and Uncharted 2 for $15.

Console-wise, the 4GB Xbox 360 is on sale for $150. And of course, the games listed above are not all that are on sale, so check GottaDeal for the full skinny on the savings, savings, savings.

Sledgehammer's crosshair set on Modern Warfare 2

While EA and Battlefield 3 are aiming to take the FPS crown from the Call of Duty series this fall, Modern Warfare 3's Sledgehammer Games interjected and states they're more focused on living up to 2009's Modern Warfare 2. 

"So although [DICE/Battlefield 3] may be our competition, I actually view Modern Warfare 2 as the benchmark that I need to aim for," Sledgehammer's Glen Schofield stated to MCV.

"We have the pressure of living up to Modern Warfare 2. I would be kidding you if I said there was no pressure. We're working on the biggest game in the world. But there is also that adrenaline that kicks in when you are working on a game like this."

Living up to Modern Warfare 2 could be tough, but if there's any game that can live up to a Call of Duty game, it's Call of Duty. 

You can't go Commando in Modern Warfare 3

We're all tired of it: Getting knifed from roughly half a football field away by somebody using the dreaded "Commando" perk in Modern Warfare 2, one that let's players perform a huge, lunging knife attack. People are still a tad worried as to which perks will return in Modern Warfare 3, but today we can rest assured on at least one of them not coming back.

Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling replied to a fan on Twitter about Modern Warfare 3's melee system, stating that it's been balanced and that  "Commando is no longer in the game." Besides that, he says, we'll "have to wait and see."

Well, there's one check mark added to my list.

Modern Warfare 3 Multiplayer Harkens back to Call of Duty 4; Less Emphasis on Air Support, more "Gun-on-Gun Gameplay"

This week in New York City, Infinity Ward's Creative Strategist Robert Bowling revealed some interesting information to Kotaku regarding the multiplayer gameplay of Modern Warfare 3. In short, Mr. Bowling proclaimed that Modern Warfare 3's multiplayer will feel more like 2007's Call of Duty 4, and less like 2009's Modern Warfare 2.

Yeah, I think we can all agree that's a good thing.

There will be less reliance on camping in Modern Warfare 3, as the developers are hard at work constructing maps that only contain around five or so "hotspots"--places on the map where players can either hide or shoot from. Bowling stated that an emphasis on this idea makes it so the "less skilled player" has less to think or worry about on the battlefield. A downplay on hiding spots on the map also de-emphasizes the camping mentality that was heavily portrayed in Modern Warfare 2. Tactical Nuke, anyone?

Rumor: Modern Warfare 3 Announcement Incoming?

It's roughly that time of year again! You know, the time when a new entry in the ga-zillion dollar franchise Call of Duty is announced? Well, according to CVG, the newest title in the series could be the heavily rumored Modern Warfare 3, as hinted by Craig Fairbrass, the voice behind Modern Warfare 2's Simon "Ghost" Riley.

Fairbrass mentioned to UK sports radio station talkSPORT that he's been off working on a "$200 million" Activision game; obviously, this can't be a Guitar Hero reboot. He also noted that whatever it is he's doing will come out in an announcement in May, so, we potentially have 28 days of anticipation ahead of us.

Players Unlocked the Modern Warfare 2 Phishing Perk; Users, Beware!

The latest Xbox Live status message should not be missed by anyone who has pivotal information on their Live accounts, especially those playing Modern Warfare 2. While most of the server statuses are "up and running," the matchmaking section reads as follows:

"Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2."

Phishing is the act of one person attempting to gain another's personal information by posing as someone they aren't, or, pretending to be a trustworthy person.


Of course, Microsoft is working on the issue; just be weary until everything is up and at 'em again.

Filmmakers Depict a Live-Action Modern Warfare 2 AC-130 Killstreak

YouTube has been known to produce work by talented people, and the gaming community on there is no exception. Today, we have a live-action, AC-130 Modern Warfare 2 killstreak as depicted by The Film Fest Rejects, which quite frankly, looks top notch.

Multiplayer Is Taking a Back Seat, and I Love It

The first-person shooter genre has grown in popularity over the years, more so than with the release of past games like DOOM, Quake, and Goldeneye. Halo: Combat Evolved revitalized the genre on consoles with its release on the original Xbox in 2001. It brought an intuitive dual-analog control scheme, something which has been a staple in shooters ever since, as well as the birth of the series’ household multiplayer suite. 

Modern Warfare 2 Re-patched, COD4 Playlist Update Soon

While Modern Warfare 2 was patched a little while ago in order to eliminate some of the hackers and hooligans plaguing the multiplayer, Infinity Ward still found some areas where they were able to be hit. So, as any developer would do, they patched those areas as well, adding additional security enhancements to the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game which is slated to release soon. PlayStation 3 users will have to wait a little bit.

Additionally, IW is planning on bringing the 2007 smash-hit Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare back, by updating the playlists to allow anyone of any rank to play any gametype.

The Modern Warfare 2 patch was successful in eliminating much of the ability of hackers, however we have identified other areas that were vulnerable and have added additional security enhancements to the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the patch. We plan to re-patch the Playstation 3 version as well with these additional updates.

Now that we have these patches on the road to release (out of production) we are looking at how we can further improve the situation on legacy titles such as Call of Duty 4. The first such move will be to update the playlists for Call of Duty 4 to allow access to all game modes regardless of rank.
