Team Fortress 2 Christmas update doubles drop rate and gives seasonal goodies

Merry Australian Christmas...Smissmas...what have you, Team Fortress 2 junkies. The free "Australian Christmas" update grants players two class packs, holiday swag, a new map, more achievements, and discounted Mann Co. items.

Engineers and Pyros can also zip up their brainiac and moonman suits... respectively, of course: Brainiacs have gone mad with new gadgets -- the Pomson 6000, which cripples medics and spies, and the Eureka Effect, a wrench that teleports the user back to spawn. Moonmen space out with their new arsenal -- the Third Degree, an axe that'll transfer damage to the opponent and their medics, the Phlogistinator, a flamethrower   that'll increase the "Mmmph" meter and allow pyros to heal themselves and give one guaranteed critical hit for each teammate for a limited time duration, and lastly, the Manmelter 3600 ZX, a gadget that'll extinguish teammates and grant them one guaranteed critical hit.

Get into the holiday spirit with double item drop rates and holiday goodies such as the Holiday Puncher Mitts, the Spy-cicle, and the Wrap Assassin. Naughty and Nice crates will contain these special items and they're only available until December 22 along with the drop rate boost. Happy Holidays!

Team Fortress 2's Halloween update out this week, play "Night of the Living Update" in the meantime

The Team Fortress 2 Halloween update is due out sometime this week, and it's the first update for the acclaimed series since it went free-to-play earlier this year. To prep for the horrors that await, Valve recommends that players revisit last year's Mann Manor and battle the Horseless Headless Horseman.

In the meantime, you can also check out the modding community's "Night of the Living Update," a haunted house where a new room containing items and skins--like the Mad Scientist Pack for the Engineer--is opened each night. They can also be downloaded for use with existing weapons. Valve hints some of these items will see their way into the official Halloween update.

Team Fortress 2's Manniversary update and sale features Steam Workshop, item tryouts, and new items

Mann Co. celebrates their first anniversary with Team Fortress 2's Manniversary update. A hilarious catalog displays the highlights of the update: the debut of Steam Workshop, new items, "try before you buy," Portal 2-style high five taunts, item decals, multiple miscellaneous slots, loadout presets, slow-mo replays, and a new map called "Gullywash."

Steam Workshop simplifies community-created content submissions and adds feedback while creators craft new in-game accessories for sale.

Over 30 new items are added in, most of which are also on sale. If you don't want to cough up money, you can try hats out before you buy them for a limited six-day duration. After the six-day trial, you can buy the item for 25% off.

Celebrate Mann Co.'s anniversary with more hats, high-fives, and new content!

Hey, you've got your Pip-Boy in my Team Fortress 2

As if Team Fortress 2 weren't awesome enough, items from various Bethesda and id Software games will be available in Valve's class-based shooter. Here's how you get 'em:

  • Skyrim Dragonborn helmet for the Heavy class- free with Skyrim pre-order
  • RAGE's Wingstick for the Engineer class- free with RAGE pre-order
  • Quake Rocket Launcher for the Soldier class- free with your purchase of Quake IV
  • Brink's "The Anger" mask for the Sniper class- free with purchase of Brink
  • Fallout's Pip-Boy for the Engineer class- free with purchase of Fallout: New Vegas

Without a doubt, the Engineer's Pip-Boy is the best of the lot, because, well, who doesn't like the little fella?

Long Time TF2'ers don't take too Kindly to the F2P Accounts

While the news of Team Fortress 2 going Free-2-Play forever may have been exciting for some, others found it a potential mess. As a result, angry paid-account players have initiated a mod called "Free2BeKicked," a user-created plugin that allows the host to auto-kick anybody running the F2P version.

The mod was since posted on alliedmods.net, and those who have been affected by it have taken to the forums and demanded the mod be banned. Obviously, the paid-account players aren't taking too kindly to the requests.

There is a loophole, however. The mod won't kick anybody who has made a purchase within the game, so those F2P players out there who are concerned about this may want to consider picking up some new headgear. Or, you can just play on Valve's servers.

Team Fortress 2 Ditches the Hats in New Update

Team Fortress 2 is doing the unthinkable by ditching the head-ware and going commando--or, hatless rather. The new Hatless update for Team Fortress 2 provides a ton of content and upgrades, such as a new user-interface in the map voting system, a new server upgrade that tracks the good servers as well as "punishing the bad," and overall improved performance.

I played Team Fortress 2 (and loved it) for a couple of years on the Xbox 360 via The Orange Box, but considering how Steam has been made available on the Mac for quite some time, I may have to jump in once again. With each new update, I feel the urge more and more.

Team Fortress 2 Gains $430,000 for Japan Relief

Apparently, Team Fortress 2 players either really, really love hats, or they really, really love Japan. Whichever of the two it is, Valve, and its smash-hit shooter Team Fortress 2 managed to gain $430, 543.65 with its Japanese disaster relief fund that started roughly two weeks ago.

Valve calls the past two weeks "inspiring", seeing gamers from the world over coming together for a universal cause.

Well, it truly is awesome that we come together as a community for a change. My bet is that tomorrow, we all go back to console disputes.

Team Fortress 2 Provides Aide to Japan

Valve is "being serious for a moment" by lending a helping hand to the citizens of Japan via a new batch of downloadable content for Team Fortress 2. The DLC includes three new hats and two new noisemakers that are sold via the Mann. Co. store, and all proceeds will be given to the American Red Cross and their Japan relief fund. Each item can be equipped by any class, however, they can't be used for trading or crafting.
