Gears of War 3 will support stereoscopic 3D, slight visual downgrade

Epic Games announced that Gears of War 3 will support stereoscopic 3D visuals when it releases on the Xbox 360 September 20. The implementation came late in the development, as stated by Epic's Rod Fergusson, though he added, "it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?"

The idea of Locust hordes barreling towards us in 3D does come at a price, because utilizing 3D on the Xbox 360 requires the game to run at a lower resolution. "Instead of 720p," says Fergusson, "you're at five something," mentioning that Gears 3 will be "a bit jaggier in certain areas."

"It was more of a post-process 3D, where we're like, OK, certain things need to be adjusted, but for the most part it generally works." Fergusson mentions that the next Xbox dev kit will have more support for 3D, or "more higher quality for native support for 3D."
