Crytek co-founder Anvi Yerli brought about the idea of releasing a "mod-community specific" version of its developer kit CryEngine to small-time developers. In a recent interview with Develop, Yerli also added that this "mod-specific release" would have a low barrier of entry...possibly even "free."
The team has a business model for this idea, and Yerli promises it will be "extremely user-friendly", but could not go into any further details regarding it.
Yerli did state, however, how great it would be for non-core games to be released via CryEngine:
"Yes, the use of CryEngine outside of core games makes a lot of sense to us and we are very interested. We actually have some developers going towards mobile and online for web and browser games."
A browser game built on the CryEngine?!
Sounds like a great dev kit for the indie teams the world over to fiddle around with. Are any of you guys (and gals) interested in game developing? Is this an engine you would be interested in test-driving?
