DICE detailed the four playable classes for Battlefield 3--Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon--on the game's official blog. Notice anything missing? That's right, there is no Medic class in Battlefield 3, but rather...
...the Assault class now carries both the Med-kits and the defibrillator. Senior Multiplayer Designer Alan Kertz states that since the Assault class is usually the run-n-gun class, "it makes sense that the guy on the frontline will be able to revive fallen teammates..." On the other hand, players can still customize the Assault class to play more like a soldier, and less like a medic.
Engineers return to both repair vehicles and destroy them. RPGs are what this class loves most, especially when taking down the building an an enemy is using as cover. New to the Engineer class is the ability to use Carbine weapons, making this class a more powerful class than ever before.
Along with his trusty LMG, the Support class now makes use of bipods and Suppressive Fire. Bipods, of course, provide increased stability while firing and can be deployed anytime you go prone and zoom in.
Suppressive Fire is a whole new feature and boasts two different effects. First, shooting an enemy in close range will blur the their screen, letting him or her know that is isn't safe to get out of cover just yet. Additionally, Suppressive Fire negatively affects the enemy's accuracy while shooting, making them less of a threat. Better yet, when utilized this gives the player team-play experience points.
Lastly, the Recon class still remains as the game's long-ranged spotter, but DICE has added a few gadgets and elements that will make the Recon class more of a team player, "even if he's sitting on the top of Wookie Mountain." DICE noted these gadgets will be explained in detail at a later time.
Again, the theme with Battlefield 3 is "play it your way," so if you're not fond of a particular class here, chances are you can adjust them to your liking.
